Orthodontic treatment

Orthodontics is a specialised branch of dentistry that focuses on the development of the face, teeth and jaws to achieve optimal function and aesthetics. Straight teeth not only result in a beautiful smile but a healthier one too.

Many patients looking for cosmetic dentistry may benefit from orthodontic treatment but only after careful assessment by an orthodontist. Dr Melanie Stern is registered as a specialist in this field, ensuring that as a patient attending our dental practice in Sheffield, you receive the most up to date and advanced dental treatment available.

Evening dental appointments are available for your convenience.

There are several ways in which your teeth can be treated orthodontically;

1. Fixed braces. This is still the most widely used orthodontic technique today and in many cases the most effective method available, particularly for children.

The braces are fixed to the teeth throughout treatment and come in a variety of forms and colour's. In many instances it is possible to replace the front part of the brace with clear (or ceramic) brackets as the greatly reduces the visual impact of the brace itself.

2. Removable braces. Removable braces are simple plate type of braces that are similar to retainers. They can only carry out simple tooth movements and are most often used on the upper teeth. Most often used on the young patient who may have one or two teeth out of position, during the early stages of tooth development. They may also be used in the adult patient for simple alignment of one or two teeth.

Another options for straightening teeth is Clearstep or Invisalign. Our orthodontist will assess whether you are suitable for this form of treament at your initial visit

Once we've determined that Invisalign is right for your needs, we will develop a detailed dental treatment plan from which your bespoke, virtually invisible aligners will be made to order.

Take a look at the simple steps on the journey towards your brand-new smile.

Step 1:

During the initial consultation, our orthodontist will discuss the issues you have with your teeth and explore what kind of results you’re hoping to achieve. If Invisalign is suitable for you, a dental treatment plan will be mapped out with your goals of straighter teeth in mind. Impressions of your teeth will be taken and sent to the Invisalign laboratories for processing.

Step 2:

The impressions of your teeth will be digitized thereby producing a computerized 3D image of your teeth. We can then plan your tooth movements throughout your entire treatment timeline. You'll be able to see a virtual representation of your teeth before, during, and after completion of the Invisalign process so you can see what your improved smile should look like when you're done with orthodontic treatment.

Step 3:

Once we have agreed to the dental care plan, bespoke aligners are custom-made for you and have to be worn for approximately two weeks before you switch to the next teeth aligner in the series. While the number of teeth aligners varies for each individual, a full orthodontic treatment typically includes 18-36 aligners for both the upper and lower teeth which will take approximately 9-18 months depending on your individual case.

Step 4:

Teeth aligners should be worn day and night, except when eating, brushing or flossing teeth in order to complete your teeth straightening treatment in the timeline determined by you and your orthodontist. You'll go in for dental checkups every 4-6 weeks to monitor your progress and to receive your next series of teeth aligners. During the entire process, you'll notice gradual movement and your teeth will, gradually move into an even and healthy smile.

Removable, so you can eat and drink what you want while in treatment, plus brushing and flossing is no problem.
